The most common output device is the monitor or VDU. Modern monitors, where the case isn’t more than a few centimetres deep, are usually Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) or Thin Film Transistors (TFT) monitors.

A light pen is a computer input device in the form of a light-sensitive wand used in conjunction with a computer’s cathode-ray tube (CRT) display. A light pen detects changes in brightness of nearby screen pixels when scanned by cathode-ray tube electron beam and communicates the timing of this event to the computer.

The input components would consist of digital devices such as, switches, push buttons, pressure mats, float switches, keypads, radio receivers etc. and analogue sensors such as light dependant resistors, thermistors, gas sensors, pressure sensors, etc.

What is an Input Transducer? An Input transducer, or sensor, takes a form of physical energy and converts it into a signal which can be read. For example, a microphone takes physical sound waves and turns those into an electrical signal which can be transferred though wires to the amplifier.

The sensor that can be used to detect light is an LDR. The LDR gives out an analog voltage when connected to VCC (5V), which varies in magnitude in direct proportion to the input light intensity on it. That is, the greater the intensity of light, the greater the corresponding voltage from the LDR will be.

Symbol definitions are as follows: The LED symbol is the standard symbol for a diode with the addition of two small arrows denoting emission (of light). Hence the name, light emitting diode (LED). The “A” indicates the anode, or plus (+) connection, and the “C” the cathode, or minus (-) connection.

In most applications, LEDs are driven by a DC power supply, but AC offers several significant advantages. LEDs are usually considered to be DC devices, operating from a few volts of direct current.
