A hammer acts as a third-class lever when it is used to drive in a nail: the fulcrum is the wrist, the effort is applied through the hand, and the load is the resistance of the wood.

It changes the direction of a downward force to a sideways force. As the hammer hits the wedge the downward force is changed to a sideways force pushing the object that the wedge is embedded into sideways. An axe is an example of a wedge as is any sharp instrument used for cutting.

Third class levers have the effort between the fulcrum and the load, and they rely on greater force to move small loads long distances. A second-class lever is when the load is between the fulcrum and the effort. Some examples of second-class levers include a stapler and a wheelbarrow.

There are three types of lever.

• First class lever – the fulcrum is in the middle of the effort and the load.
• Second class lever – the load is in the middle between the fulcrum and the effort.
• Third class lever – the effort is in the middle between the fulcrum and the load.

In a Class Three Lever, the Force is between the Load and the Fulcrum. If the Force is closer to the Load, it would be easier to lift and a mechanical advantage. Examples are shovels, fishing rods, human arms and legs, tweezers, and ice tongs. A fishing rod is an example of a Class Three Lever.

A wheelbarrow, a type of second-class lever and one of the six simple machines. Examples of this type of lever include a balance scale, crowbar, and a pair of scissors. A second-class lever is when the load is placed between the fulcrum and effort.

The catapult in the Bill Nye video is a class 1 lever. A class 2 lever has the load between the fulcrum and the effort. Because the load and effort are on the same side, they move in the same direction.

With third class levers the effort is between the load and the fulcrum, for example in barbecue tongs. Other examples of third class levers are a broom, a fishing rod and a woomera.

Some kinds of garden tools are examples of third-class levers. When you use a shovel, for example, you hold one end steady to act as the fulcrum, and you use your other hand to pull up on a load of dirt. The second hand is the effort force, and the dirt being picked up is the resistance force.

Third class lever system There are many examples of third class lever systems, including both flexion and extension at the knee joint. During flexion at the knee, the point of insertion of the hamstrings on the tibia is the effort, the knee joint is the fulcrum and the weight of the leg is the load.

The biceps attach between the fulcrum (the elbow joint) and the load, meaning a biceps curl uses a third class lever.

A Stapler is a class 3 lever.

Typical staplers are a third-class lever.
