As an extension to the string quartet (two violins, a viola, and a cello), a string quintet includes a fifth string instrument, usually a second viola (a so-called “viola quintet”) or a second cello (a “cello quintet”), or occasionally a double bass.

For an accompanied choir, the bass is typically provided by pipe organ or piano (or if a choir can afford to hire one, by orchestra). The double bass is the only modern bowed string instrument that is tuned in fourths (like a bass guitar or viol), rather than fifths, with strings usually tuned to E1, A1, D2 and G2. In contrast, all other bowed chordophones are tuned to perfect fifths.

A scale length of more than 35” begins to be uncomfortable to play unless you have huge hands. A 34” scale bass is fine for a 4-string bass. For a good-sounding low B string on a 5-string bass you should seriously consider a 35” scale bass.

Upright Bass Sizes

The standard size for adults is a ¾ double bass. A large double bass such as a ⅞ or 4/4 is very rare and not commonly used unless the person is very tall, 6.5′ + in height or they have unusually large hands. A general rule for children is to choose a bass one size smaller than usual violin size for age./span>

In general there are two major approaches to the design outline shape of the double bass, these being the violin form, and the viol or gamba form. A third less common design called the busetto shape (and very rarely the guitar or pear shape) can also be found.

The body itself, without the neck, may be up to 4.5 feet (1.4 metres) for a full-size instrument, about 3.8 feet (1.2 metres) for a three-quarter size, and only slightly larger than a cello for the small chamber bass, or bassetto.

So the terminology is not confusing at all. The term “double bass” is more a reference to the acoustic “bass fiddle”. It’s use is primarily in orchestral settings, Jazz settings, Bluegrass and Rockabilly settings. It’s function is no different than the bass guitar, and the tuning is the same, low to high: EADG.

Playing the upright is difficult. It’s a physically demanding instrument that takes a long time to work your body, arms, and fingers into being able to play efficiently enough to avoid injuries.

Results, at the average note, were as follows: violin, 85.9 db: viola, 79.5 db: cello, 76.52 db: double bass, 75.97 db.

The highest note for the bass guitar or double bass is typically considered G4 at 392 Hz. The double bass is the only string instrument in the standard symphony orchestra that is tuned to perfect fourths instead of perfect fifths.

At full volume, an acoustic violin can range from 78 to 95 dB. That’s just loud enough to require ear protection if you’re playing for more than an hour, but still soft enough to be drowned out by a band.

A violin will sound louder than a cello playing the same note in the same octave at the same dynamic. The viola will as well but to a lesser degree.

Getting intonation right on cello is much more difficult than on guitar, since frets make it really easy for you. Cello is more difficult than guitar, and you can’t realistically expect to teach yourself. Guitar is much easier, so you can learn it without any lessons just by watching youtube videos and playing around.

Many beginning musicians wonder, “Is cello hard to learn?” The process of learning the cello is not difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that the cello is not an instrument of instant gratification. It does require focused, daily practice time and a good teacher to guide you along the way.
