If you do believe a larger monitor is an advantage, then 4:3 stretched can actually be superior to 16:9 using your arguments (if the perceived advantage from larger models tops the loss from decreased FOV). As such, everyone used 4:3 resolutions, and carried their habits over to CS:GO.

If you’re showing a PowerPoint presentation on an older projector, iPad, or tablet, you’ll need a Standard template. For all others projection types, including laptops, TV monitors, or modern projectors, you’ll need a Widescreen 16:9 template.

Basic steps

1. Select the Design tab of the toolbar ribbon.
2. Select Slide Size near the far right end of the toolbar.
3. Select Standard (4:3 aspect ratio) or Widescreen (16:9) or Custom Slide Size.

It is 78% wider than it is tall, and fully one-third wider than a 4:3 screen. 16:9 widescreen monitors are ideally suited to display HD video signals. Some models can also display SD (standard definition) video signals, but this will require some compromises, as you will read below.

That means the picture is 4 units wide for every three units of height. Meanwhile, the new HDTV standard is 16:9, which is 16 units of width for every 9 units of height. Aspect ratio is primarily dictated by the size of your camera’s sensor, taken from the width and height of an image (W:H). For instance, if your camera sensor is 36mm wide and 24mm high, its aspect ratio would be 3:2 (not 36mm x 24mm).

How to calculate aspect ratio?

1. Take your original height. In our example, it will be 1200 pixs.
2. Take your original width.
3. Divide the height by the width, e.g. 1200 / 1600 = 0.75.
4. Multiply the quotient by the preferred width, e.g. 0.75 * 300 = 225.
5. The resulting figure is your new height given in pixels.
