Isaac Jogues, S.J. (10 January 1607 – 18 October 1646) was a French missionary and martyr who traveled and worked among the Iroquois, Huron, and other Native populations in North America. In 1646, Jogues was martyred by the Mohawk at their village of Ossernenon, north of the Mohawk River.

On November 16, 1989, members of the Salvadoran military brutally murdered six Jesuit priests and two others at the University of Central America in El Salvador. The priests were assassinated because they spoke out against the government and were advocates for the poor.

All the martyrs died between Sept. 29, 1642 and Dec. 9,1649. They were beatified on June 21, 1925, and canonized June 29, 1930; their feast day is September 26.

Brébeuf was killed at St. Ignace in Huronia on 16 March 1649. He had been taken captive with Gabriel Lalemant when the Iroquois destroyed the Huron mission village at Saint-Louis. As part of the ritual, the Iroquois drank his blood and ate his heart, as they wanted to absorb Brébeuf’s courage in enduring the pain.

Gabriel Lalemant (October 3, 1610, Paris, France – March 17, 1649, Saint Ignace, Ontario) was a Jesuit missionary in New France beginning in 1646. Caught up in warfare between the Huron and nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, he was killed in St. Ignace by Mohawk warriors and is one of the eight Canadian Martyrs.

The Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church consider Isaac as a saint along with other biblical patriarchs.

Isaac was the only son of Abraham and Sarah, and the long-promised child for them in their old age. Long past their prime, they experienced the miracle of a longed-for son when God gave them Isaac. In this we see Isaac, a type of Christ.
