The tumors enlarge very slowly, sometimes so slowly that they go unnoticed as new growths. However, the growth rate varies greatly from tumor to tumor, with some growing as much as ½ inch (about 1 centimeter) in a year. Basal cell carcinomas rarely spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body.

When found early, basal cell carcinoma is highly treatable.

Cryotherapy. Cryotherapy is a nonsurgical treatment for basal cell carcinoma. Your doctor applies liquid nitrogen to the tumor, freezing the abnormal tissue.

Basal cell carcinomas may appear to heal on their own but inevitably will recur. Common symptoms of basal cell carcinoma include: Round, dome-shaped or flat scaling bumps. Pink to red, pearly or translucent.

The earlier basal cell carcinoma is diagnosed, the better the patient’s chance of survival. The therapies that are currently used for basal cell carcinoma offer an 85 to 95 percent recurrence-free cure rate. This means that the specific lesion being treated is effectively cured by the first round of treatment.

If left untreated, basal cell carcinomas can become quite large, cause disfigurement, and in rare cases, spread to other parts of the body and cause death.

These treatments are usually pretty successful at removing the cancerous growth, but it’s important to remember that basal cell carcinoma can re-develop.

Basal cell carcinoma that is superficial and doesn’t extend very far into the skin may be treated with creams or ointments. The drugs imiquimod (Aldara) and fluorouracil (Efudex, Fluoroplex , others) are used for several weeks to treat such low-risk basal cell carcinomas.
