The property was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture and landscaping, and for the agricultural innovation of grafting pecan trees, performed there in 1846–47 by an enslaved gardener.

It is Josephine’s great nephew and Zeb Sr.’s son, Zeb Mayhew Jr. that has served as Executive Director of Oak Alley Foundation for the past 37 years. Three generations of the Mayhew family, direct descendants of Josephine Stewart, are still actively involved with Oak Alley as we know it today!

No buildings survived to tell about the lives of the enslaved workers on this nine-thousand-acre plantation, although records indicate that they were housed in twenty-four cabins. Other buildings included a hospital, an overseer’s house, stables with one hundred stalls, a sugarhouse, and a sawmill.
