Fourteen nations (according to the IOC, though the number is subject to interpretation) and 241 athletes (all males; this number is also disputed) took part in the games. Russian athletes are set to participate at the Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Games under the name “ROC”. The details were announced today in implementation guidelines approved by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)’s Compliance Review Committee.

Russian athletes are barred from competing at major international events, including the Olympics, with their flag and anthem until 2022. The country will compete in Tokyo under the name “ROC”, an acronym for the Russian Olympic Committee.

Anti-Doping Agency Bans Russia From International Sports Events For 4 Years. WADA said in a statement that the ruling was “a clear endorsement” of its assertion that data from a laboratory in Moscow had been tampered with before being handed over to WADA investigators, and it said it was pleased to have won the case.

That’s because of a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling from December which barred Russia’s name, flag, anthem and other national symbols in a package of sanctions over what it deemed Russia’s failure to turn over accurate data from the Moscow drug-testing laboratory.
