If replacement feeding is chosen, the feeding amounts listed on the product should be used. Puppies less than two weeks of age should be fed every 3-4 hours. Puppies two to four weeks of age do well with feedings every 6-8 hours.

Treatment

1. Warm in bottle and let babies nurse it down. By bottle feeding them for one feeding, the electrolytes will help to counter the dehydration.
2. Pedialyte can be used in an emergency but dilute 50/50 with water as it is too sweet for a puppy or kitten and they don’t nurse the Pedialyte as well.

In a young puppy, diarrhea can be caused by viruses and parasites. A stool sample to the vet is a good idea to check for Coccidia (Coccidiosis), Giardia, Trichomonas or other infections. If your litter of two-week-old puppies gets diarrhea, it could be worms. This requires vet medicine to treat.

So it’s not unusual for puppies to react with a mild gastrointestinal (GI) tract upset and develop diarrhea. To help reduce the stress that your pup may experience, let them adjust to their new surroundings slowly. Limit the number of visitors they meet during the first weeks to avoid overwhelming them.

Diarrhea in newborns (1- 4 weeks old) can be frightening and deadly so consult with a vet immediately. Some loose stool can be due to over feeding, if you are bottle feeding as well as the mom, and it can be due to a diet too rich for the puppies causing “rapid transit stools”. This can happen with goats milk.

While diarrhea in newborn puppies is most likely fixed with a change of diet, there are more severe causes of diarrhea. One of these is the presence of roundworms in the digestive system. Mothers who have roundworms can pass them on to their newborn puppies.

Young puppies are prone to parasites. Whether they are born with parasites or pick them up from the environment, parasites like roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, coccidia, and giardia all cause diarrhea in puppies and all require veterinary attention.

Diarrhea can be associated with viruses like parvovirus and distemper. It can also be caused by intestinal parasites like whipworms and hookworms, protozoa like giardia, and bacteria like salmonella and E. coli. Some types of intestinal parasites can require several tests (over weeks) to obtain a diagnosis.

Stools should be formed, light brown with a yellow–seedy appearance. Urine color should be assessed on a cotton ball at least once daily to monitor for adequate nursing and dehydration. The urine should be pale yellow in color. If the urine is darker yellow in color, this signifies dehydration.

Newborn puppies can go two hours without eating up until they are 3 weeks old after birth. Older puppies can go without eating for up to 5 hours before needing to eat and drink again. Anything longer than that is not recommended.

Newborn puppies should not drink water at the age of 2 weeks. Not only does water not offer them any nutritional value at this young age, but 2 week old puppies might even get a little sick when drinking water. This is my puppy at 8 weeks old – by this age, drinking water is second nature to them.

If your old dog has diarrhea (small or large bowel) that appears to be chronic or intermittent, causes can include: 1 Infectious diseases 2 Small intestinal dysbiosis 3 Food responsive disease 4 Inflammatory bowel disease 5 Systemic illnesses and cancer

Nursing baby diarrhea from Coccidia is secondary and rarely considered a diarrhea cause here. Coccidia can be an issue if we did nothing to mom pre-birth (CocciGuard or Marquis) and must be considered in large breed dogs four weeks old.

You can help your dog by feeding a bland diet, such as cooked white chicken and rice or Under the Weather Rice, Chicken & Pumpkin Flavor Freeze-Dried Dog Food, for a couple of days until the diarrhea resolves. If time and bland food aren’t curing your senior dog’s loose stool blues, it is time to get the vet involved.

You should also call your vet if your puppy has not received all of her vaccinations and is having diarrhea. The parvovirus causes diarrhea in puppies and is a potentially lethal infection that requires immediate veterinary attention. The treatment for your puppy’s diarrhea depends on the cause.
