This means that you must securely support EMT no more than every 10-feet. This means you can strap it every 3 feet if you want, just not more than 10 feet between straps/supports. You can run type NM cable in conduit, as long as the conduit is sized appropriately, and is not in a wet or damp location. If you remove the sheath from the conductors inside NM cable, you cannot use the conductors for anything (anything electrical anyway).

Check the conduit fill charts to make sure the new wires are allowed without exceeding maximum fill. Usually you can use one old wire as a pull cord but sometimes they have a twist so you need to disconnect all the old wires and replace them as well as adding your new wires.
