Common causes of food waste in restaurants include overbuying, overproduction, and spoilage. Overbuying is often a result of inadequate forecasting of consumer demand and the large quantities of food that restaurants typically need to purchase at one time.

Food waste ends up wasting nearly a quarter of our water supply in the form of uneaten food or over $172 billion in wasted water. When food is disposed in a landfill it rots and becomes a significant source of methane – a potent greenhouse gas with 21 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.

The majority of wasted food ends up in landfills and then breaks down to produce methane and carbon dioxide emissions, which contribute to climate change. Composting food and diverting it from entering landfills helps prevent the creation of global greenhouse gas emissions and protects the environment.

When thrown into landfill, food waste produces a large amount of methane. As food rots and degrades, it emits these harmful gases which are 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide in terms of trapping heat in the atmosphere.

Throwing away food, particularly bread, is a sin. People have traditionally believed so. It’s a sin to dump food’ (retired male, watchman, aged 72). Empathy with people from poorer countries, such as compassion for malnourished African children, or popular wisdom learned in childhood can also play a role.

It is a sin to be lazy. Laziness causes people to stop growing. Being lazy is refusing to obey God and refusing to do everything for His glory. It causes people to miss out on relying on the Holy Spirit for rest even in the hardest and craziest of times.

In the Book of Genesis, God told Adam and Eve what food to eat. He said that “every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it” is theirs to eat. He also added, “everything that lives and moves about will be food for you.”

As C.S. Lewis said, “[Pride] is the complete anti-God state of mind. It is “The Great Sin” that leads to all other sins, because pride is the exaltation of Self above all authority, even God’s authority. Pride is cosmic arrogance.

One eternal or unforgivable sin (blasphemy against the Holy Spirit) is specified in several passages of the Synoptic Gospels, including Mark 3:28–29, Matthew 12:31–32, and Luke 12:10.

Of the seven deadly sins, theologians and philosophers reserve a special place for pride. Lust, envy, anger, greed, gluttony and sloth are all bad, the sages say, but pride is the deadliest of all, the root of all evil, and the beginning of sin.

Sloth can indicate spiritual laziness We often think of a “couch potato” as being slothful. Sloth is a sin against God’s love in that it goes so far as to refuse the joy that comes from God and to be repelled by divine goodness. It is a loss of hope in ever achieving what God wants for us: our eternal happiness.
