Board Foot: Rough sawn lumber is usually sold by the “board foot” (bd. ft.). A board foot is equal to a piece of wood 12 inches long x 12 inches wide and 1 inch thick, or 144 cubic inches. To figure the board foot measurement of a piece of wood, multiply the length x width x thickness in inches, then divide by 144.

Because of this extra milling, a 2×4 no longer measures a full 2 inches by four inches. Instead, a 2×4 is really only 1 1/2″ by 3 1/2″. The same is true of pine. A 1×6, for example, actually measures 3/4″ x 5 1/2″.

If the slight difference in width isn’t a problem, consider using a couple of 2x2s instead, it’s much easier (2×2 will be 1.5″ by 1.5″, half of a 2×4 would be 1.5″x1.

3 Answers. If you buy the pipe at Home Depot, they custom cut it (and thread it) for free. You have to buy the pipe, and there is a fairly flexible policy that they will make up to three cuts per 10 foot length, but if you catch them an hour before closing or when it is not otherwise busy, they are very accommodating.
