500 hp is the “generally accepted” limit on any 289-302 block.

On an inline engine: the number one cylinder is located at the front of the engine, closest to the timing cover. On a V type engine: one cylinder head is slightly forward of the other, toward the front of the engine. Cylinder number one is the forward most cylinder in that bank.

The only difference between the 289 and 302 is the 302 has a 1/8″ longer stroke.

The main difference between a 260 and a 289 is the 260 has a 6 inch space between the motor mount bolt holes, while the 289 has a 7 inch space. All 260 engines have a 5-bolt bellhousing bolt pattern. The 1963 and 1964 1/2 289 engines have the same 5-bolt pattern. The 260 has a smaller cylinder bore.

Install a high-flowing dual-plane intake, ceramic coated headers (stock 289 HiPo manifolds flow well and will fit nicely on GT40P heads if you opt to use them), a 675-750 cfm carburetor (or a retrofitted 5.0L electronic fuel injection system), and a good HEI-style aftermarket distributor.

289 V8 Small Block With small dimensions, a relatively small weight, and decent power, the 289 engine was an impressive offering for car buyers. Horsepower. The 351 was available as a two-barrel which was a basic engine and a four-barrel, or performance, engine. The two-barrel was rated at 240 horsepower while the four-barrel was rated at 285 horsepower.

The 289 cu in (4.7 L) was also introduced in April 1963. Bore was expanded to 4.00 in (101.6 mm), becoming the standard bore for most small block engines. Stroke remained at 2.87 inches. The 289 weighed 506 lb (230 kg).
