Do you sleep on board? No. Unlike other train services such as VIA Rail, Rocky Mountaineer only operates in daylight hours and is not a sleeper service. This ensures you don’t miss any sights during the night.

Via rail goes from Vancouver to Jasper. Rocky Mountaineer goes from Vancouver to Lake Louise and Banff. The advantage to going to Jasper on Via Rail is the drive down the Ice Fields Parkway going towards Lake Louise and Banff. Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff hotels and food are very expensive.

The best way to explore the Canadian Rockies will be to fly to Calgary. From Calgary it’s only a bit more than one hour driving to the mountains and it’s also a good place where you can rent a car or a motorhome. Food and gas is cheaper here than in the mountains, so you can stock for the trip.
