Despite the money and time, you will put in taking the training, it’s definitely worth the advantage. If you are certified driving the forklift, you are competent to do your job; you have the necessary skills and qualifications.

The short answer is “yes” – it is necessary to hold a licence to operate a forklift. However, if you are “in training” you are permitted to operate a forklift without a licence until such time as you are competent enough to be assessed. You must be within sight and sound of a licensed operator at all times.

When you get your LF Licence, you are authorised to operate any forklift vehicle except for those that are classified as LO – which stands for Load-Shifting Order Picker.

High reach forklift is in the classification of LO licence. When you had your LF licence, this licence doesn’t allow you to drive forklifts classified as LO. You need separate training specific only to LO-classified vehicles such as turret truck, load shifting order picker truck and high reach forklift.

An LF licence allows you to operate any forklift truck, excluding a load-shifting order picking truck (or LO classified vehicle). Whereas an LO licence will only qualify you to operate a load-shifting order picker and a “turret truck” – which is also known as a VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) truck.
