LigaSure™ tissue fusion, like LigaSure™ vessel sealing, uses the body’s own collagen and elastin to create a permanent fusion zone. This technology can fuse vessels up to and including 7 mm, lymphatics, and tissue bundles, and has an average seal cycle of two to four seconds in most surgical situations.

LigaSure (bipolar vessel sealing) technology is a radiofrequency-driven bipolar electrosurgical device. A tissue-based feedback program is used to regulate the dose of energy administered, which is appropriate for bulk tissue or vessel density, and the aim is to limit the heat generated in the target tissue.

In contrast, the Harmonic scalpel uses ultrasound technology to denature proteins in vessel walls and tissues up to 5mm thick leading to coagulation [16]. Unlike the LigaSure, the Harmonic scalpel is also able to cut through tissue as it coagulates.

I have been using this instrument along with the Harmonic Scalpel (Ethicon Endosurgery, Somerville, NJ) for many years now. LigaSure™ uses a combination of pressure and continuous bipolar energy to create vessel fusion.

If a given surgeon is able to get everything out of the device that it is supposed to deliver (coagulation, cutting, dissecting, and grasping) there may be some added value, but at that retail price, even that is a stretch.
