Motor starting capacitors ar non-polarized, AC devices. It doesn’t matter which way you connect the wires.

Always use a replacement capacitor that has at least the voltage rating of your old capacitor, but if size is not a limiting factor it does not hurt to use a new capacitor with a voltage rating higher than the old capacitor.

SHORT OUT LEADS – In rare cases a capacitor has been known to explode when shorted out. Wear gloves and eye protection and lay a cloth over the capacitor before you short it out. To short the capacitor place an insulated screwdriver across the three leads of the capacitor.
