Notre Dame has only donned the green 13 times since Devine, sporting a 7-6 record.

Members of the Notre Dame football team will be donning green jerseys for Saturday night’s game against the Florida State Seminoles, it was announced Friday.

The origin of school colors can be traced back to the founding of the University. At the time of its founding in 1842, Notre Dame’s original school colors were yellow and blue; yellow symbolized the light and blue the truth. That logo on the pants switched from blue to green beginning in ’95.

In 2019, Notre Dame asked for a green out with the same type of “IRISH WEAR GREEN” campaign against the USC Trojans, and chose to wear blue jerseys. Irish wear green — unless you’re actually playing football. This is unacceptable. Just be cool — wear the green jerseys against the Clemson Tigers.

The history of Clemson’s school colors is rather convoluted. The first Clemson Agricultural College senior class chose garnet and navy blue as their college colors in 1896; ribbons in these colors were used to tie the diplomas the college conferred that year.

The nickname “Death Valley” for Memorial Stadium, derives both from Death Valley National Park in California as well as the location of the Clemson University cemetery on a hill that once overlooked the field—before the upper decks were constructed.

It is symbolic of the courage and sacrifice possessed by those recipients of the Purple Heart award. Holding a “Purple Out” for Clemson’s Military Appreciation Day football game will allow the Clemson community to show its support of the University’s military tradition and the United States Armed Forces.

Clemson first broke out the purple jerseys for its game with North Carolina State. The Tigers were 3-1-1 and the Wolfpack 6-0. “Clemson will wear purple for psychological reasons,” Martin said. “Remember, they used to wear orange and blue striped pants.

Clemson’s athletic teams have been nicknamed the Tigers since 1896, when coach (and later university president) Walter Merritt Riggs brought the name from his alma mater, Auburn University. The name came from a Greenville News editor’s nickname for Clemson students, and was discontinued in 1972.
