As of April 2021, it has been adopted by fifteen states and the District of Columbia. These states have 196 electoral votes, which is 36% of the Electoral College and 73% of the 270 votes needed to give the compact legal force. Certain legal questions may affect implementation of the compact.

Are there restrictions on who the electors can vote for? There is no Constitutional provision or Federal law that requires electors to vote according to the results of the popular vote in their States. Some States, however, require electors to cast their votes according to the popular vote.

Usually, electoral votes align with the popular vote in an election. Each state shall appoint, in such manner as its legislature may direct, a number of electors equal to the whole number of senators and members of the House of Representatives to which the state may be entitled in the legislature.

Only two states, Nebraska and Maine, do not follow this winner-take-all method. In those states, electoral votes are proportionally allocated. Can a candidate win the electoral vote, but lose the popular vote? Yes.

Electoral College Certificates and Votes by State

Voters in each state choose electors by casting a vote for the presidential candidate of their choice. The slate winning the most popular votes is the winner. Only two states, Nebraska and Maine, do not follow this winner-take-all method.

Nebraska has five electoral votes in the Electoral College, two from the state at large, and one each from the three congressional districts.

At the end of the term, the president-elect is promoted to the position of president, and a new president-elect is elected. The position of president-elect is different from someone who was elected president and is called “president-elect” between the time of election and the start of the term.

The election is notable for being the only presidential election in which a major party nominee died during the election process. On November 29, 1872, after the popular vote was counted, but before the Electoral College cast its votes, Greeley died.

President of India

President. The President must be a citizen of India, not less than 35 years of age, and qualified for election as member of the Lok Sabha. His term of office is five years, and he is eligible for re-election.
