After all the Blues left the stadium, Imperial troops led by Belisarius and Mundus stormed into the Hippodrome and killed over 30,000 of the remaining rebels. Justinian also had Hypatius executed and exiled the senators who had supported the riot.

Justinian is best remembered for his work as a legislator and codifier. He also sponsored the codification of laws known as the Codex Justinianus (Code of Justinian) and directed the construction of several important cathedrals, including the Hagia Sophia.

Justinian had reacted to that by sending in troops and condemning seven ringleaders of the riots to death. The Nika Riots were touched off when the seven were to be hung. Five of them died, but two (a Green and a Blue) survived when the scaffold broke.

Theodora, a 6th-century Byzantine empress married to Emperor Justinian I, is remembered for being one of the most powerful women in Byzantine history. She used her power and influence to promote religious and social policies that were important to her. She was one of the first rulers to recognize the rights of women.

The meaning of Theodora is ‘gift of god’. It is a biblical name derived from theos meaning ‘god’ ; doron ‘gift’. An older form of the name is Theodora (Old Greek).

In this mosaic we see Theodora ensconced in the middle of her entourage, wearing her resplendent purple robes and leading a procession to carry the communion chalice to church. She is the only person over whom no other figure overlaps, and she wears a crown encrusted with large jewels.

Unlike the fallen Western province of the Roman empire, Justinian and Theodora developed a ​centralized government where all power and decision-making was concentrated in one unit instead of having power in the hands of many different people in different locations.

Empress Theodora Mosaic, San Vitale, Ravenna | San Vitale is one of the most important surviving examples of Byzantine architecture and mosaic work. It was begun in 526 or 527 under Ostrogothic rule. It was consecrated in 547 and completed soon after.

Theodora was empress of the Byzantine Empire and the wife of Emperor Justinian I. She was one of the most influential and powerful of the Byzantine empresses. Theodora participated in Justinian’s legal and spiritual reforms, and her involvement in the increase of the rights of women was substantial.

Before she married Justinian, the nephew of Emperor Justin (r. 518-527 CE), in 525 CE, Theodora left the sands of the Hippodrome to travel to North Africa as the mistress of a medium-level civil servant.
