Losing in overtime or by shootout still provides one point for loser and two points for winner. If you hear hockey analyst, coach or player refer to “three-point games,” this is what they mean. When a game goes to overtime or shootout, the two teams collect three points between them.

Each team gets three attempts to score and get a shot on goal during a shootout. Whichever team achieves the most goals out of these three shots wins the game. If the score is tied after three attempts, a sudden-death will determine the winner. The team that wins the next frame in the shootout wins the game.

If a game remains tied after the five-minute, four-on-four overtime period, the teams will engage in a shootout, in which three skaters aside take alternating penalty shots against the opposing goaltender. If still tied after three shots per team, ‘sudden-death’ shots will be taken to reach a decision.

In ice hockey, a penalty shot is a type of penalty awarded when a team loses a clear scoring opportunity on a breakaway because of a foul committed by an opposing player. A player from the non-offending team is given an attempt to score a goal without opposition from any defending players except the goaltender.

Dylan Larkin set the NHL record for single-lap speed when he won the NHL Fastest Skater Competition in 2016 with a time of 13.172 seconds. Larkin, who made his only All-Star Game as a rookie in 2016, was drafted No. 15 overall in the 2014 NHL draft.

If the skater was comfortable and believed that they would shave a few seconds off their time in a blue suit rather than a red suit, time would actually improve. There is more to speed skating though than just the color of the costume, skill of the athlete, and comfort of the suit.

The average speed of an inline skate is about 8 miles per hour to about 16 miles per hour. But top skaters can travel for 1 hour at 25+ mph on average. Top speed can be in excess of 40+mph.
