During the follow-up period, 35% (1,560 of the 4,475) of the homeless Veterans died from all causes, compared with a significantly smaller proportion (3,649 of 20,071, 18%) of the Veterans with no history of homelessness.

The survey found that 23 percent of all homeless persons ? and 33 percent of all homeless men ? are veterans. By taking 23 percent of the total range, that would indicate there are between 529,000 and 840,000 veterans who are homeless at some time during the year.

Many of these veterans suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, an anxiety disorder that often occurs after extreme emotional trauma involving threat or injury. Causes of homelessness include: Disabilities – physical injury or mental illness. Substance abuse – drug abuse or alcoholism.

1.4 million veterans are at risk of homelessness. It is because of these reasons that an estimated 1.4 million veterans are at risk of homelessness in the US.

that the top four causes of homelessness among unaccompanied individuals were (1) lack of affordable housing, (2) unemployment, (3) poverty, (4) mental illness and the lack of needed services, and (5) substance abuse and the lack of needed services.

Homelessness and brain injury The VA’s Inspector General (IG) said, “Presence of mental disorders (substance-related disorders and/or mental illness) is the strongest predictor of becoming homeless after discharge from active duty.”

Of 10,524 homeless veterans assessed in a 43-site VA program, 50 percent served during the Vietnam War era, compared to only 29 percent of all veterans in the general population.

However, the NVVRS also revealed that a substantial minority of Vietnam-era Veterans were suffering from a variety of psychological problems such as PTSD, and were experiencing a wide range of life-adjustment problems, such as marital trouble and work difficulties.
