Core countries have certain powers over other countries regarding the economy, politics, and the military. These countries are known as core countries because they serve as the core of the world system. Great Britain is a great example of a core country, as seen in the British Commonwealth.

Peripheral countries are usually agrarian, have low literacy rates and lack consistent Internet access. Semi-peripheral countries (e.g., South Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, Brazil, India, Nigeria, South Africa) are less developed than core nations but more developed than peripheral nations.

Nigeria has the fastest growing economy in Africa and the highest GNP on the continent. Nigeria has the largest population on the continent and the third-largest manufacturing sector. The country also has the largest agricultural output and the highest number of cattle. Nigerian music is enjoyed throughout Africa.

Despite being a somewhat globalised country, Bangladesh is still considered a stable periphery country. The development of a country is determined through a standard process where the more developed countries control the countries of the Third World or peripherally, economically, politically, socially, and culturally.

The standard definition of Canada’s core-periphery is shown in Figure 1. As already noted, Quebec and Ontario form the core regions; the western, northern and Atlantic Provinces are all considered as peripheral to the centre.

Japan has the world’s third-largest economy, having achieved remarkable growth in the second half of the 20th Century after the devastation of the Second World War. Its role in the international community is considerable. It is a major aid donor, and a source of global capital and credit.
