Coolant hoses typically last several years, though anything longer than 10 years may be pushing the limits. Rubber weakens with age and from repeated exposure to hot coolant, so the older they get the higher chance they’ll leak and cause the engine to overheat.

I’ve always used Permatex Aviation “Form-A-Gasket” to seal radiator and heater hose ends to their connector. Lightly and evenly coat the dry and cleaned connector, plus about an inch of inside the hose end. Let it setup for a couple of hours to allow most of the solvent to blow off, then slide the hose on and clamp.

That goes in front because it wants the maximum amount of cooling, the more cooling it gets the more efficient your AC is and the less time the compressor has to be on. If the compressor is on less that means better gas mileage because the engine can be without the compressor’s drag more of the time.
