The lifespan of a typical dishwasher is 7 to 10 years. Take this into consideration when deciding whether to repair or replace a malfunctioning unit. If it’s only a few years old and the repair cost is less than half of what a replacement would cost, you’re better off repairing it.

5 Signs You Probably Need to Replace Your Dishwasher

1. Your dishes don’t come out hot. Perhaps the most important factor in clean, germ-free dishes is hot, sudsy water.
2. You see rust.
3. The door doesn’t latch properly — or at all.
4. It doesn’t drain properly.
5. It isn’t energy efficient.

A dishwasher may not be worth repairing depending on what the problem is. If the dishwasher needs something simple but important, such as a door latch or seal, soap dispenser, pressure switch, drain pump or fill valve, repair may be worth it.

If your dishwasher uses a heating element and you’ve noticed the dishware is not drying properly, you should first inspect the element for any corrosion, blistering, or cracks. Any visible damage is a strong indicator that the element has burned out and will need to be replaced.

In case of failure of the heating element, the water isn’t heated enough for the appliance to work. If the dishes are cold, the water is not warm enough. So you need to replace the faulty heater as quick as possible.

A dishwasher will work perfectly fine without hot water. Generally, it requires water at around 120 F temperature. Then the machine will heat it up to 140-150 F temperature for better cleaning. However, old dishwasher models need a hot water connection.

If you have your dishwasher connected to the cold water supply then it’s highly likely that a faulty heating element or thermostat are the cause of the water not heating. If you’re connecting to hot then it’s worth checking the water supply to check that there is actually an issue with the dishwasher and not elsewhere.
