0.5 mL syringes are for 30 to 50 units of insulin and are numbered at 1-unit intervals. 1.0 mL are for doses more than 50 units of insulin and are numbered at 2 units per interval.

Firstly, 1mL (or milliliter) is exactly equal to 1cc (cubic centimeter). The two terms can be used interchangeably. The total volume of the syringe is 1.0mL. Therefore, it is measured in ten 0.1mL increments.
