Imogene Pass is a 17.5 mile heavily trafficked point-to-point trail located near Ouray, Colorado that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for scenic driving and ohv/off road driving and is best used from March until October.

Do not take this trip lightly. The road is rocky, steep and narrow in places and passing can be dangerous. Stock SUVs should have low-range gearing, 4-wheel drive, high clearance and skid plates. Experienced drivers only.

Camping: Dispersed camp sites are at the north end of Imogene Pass near Camp Bird Mine, and near timberline in Imogene Basin. Base Camp: This would be a good area to base camp.

It’s definitely doable. They take tour rigs with 1 ton pickups that have bench seating instead of a bed all the time up there. There are a few spots where you might need to make a 47 point turn but it’s doable for sure.

Agree, both towns are unique and historic. Telluride has been there well over 100 years. It is more upscale than Ouray regarding number and quality of restaurants, hotels, etc., but does not qualify as “glitzy”.

History. The Imogene Pass road was built in 1880 for access to Ouray from Tomboy Mine. It was named for Imogene Richardson, the wife of one of the Thomas Walsh’s partners in the Camp Bird Mine. Wires carrying the first commercial transmission of alternating current electricity were strung across this pass in the 1890s.

You can drive Black Bear Pass one-way only—downhill from Red Mountain Pass. Once a year, during the annual Jeeper’s Jamboree the traffic can go up the hill.
