Signs your cat is in heat

DEAR RUBY: Cats do not undergo menopause, and a cat that has not been spayed will continue to be fertile and produce kittens throughout her life. Likewise, she will continue to have estrous cycles — known as going into heat — for her entire life. Most cats are capable of becoming mothers around the age of 6 months.

Though spaying a cat in heat is not ideal, it can be done. However, there are some disadvantages to this. When a cat is in heat, the blood vessels that supply the reproductive organs and surrounding tissues become engorged with blood. The tissues may be more prone to tearing.

During a heat your cat may be more affectionate, rubbing up against furniture, walls and her favorite people. She’ll probably rub with her hindquarters in particular and may frequently display the mating position with her hindquarters and tail raised.

This period may last anywhere from one to seven days. Generally, cats are known as seasonally polyestrous, experiencing multiple cycles during the breeding season and potentially year-long if they are primarily indoor pets.

Cats do not experience cramps or other physical symptoms, despite their howling and need for attention during this time. Instead, a surge of hormones will make your cat extraordinarily eager to mate. She may rub against you, pace back and forth, and assume a mating position if you pet or stroke her.

Scientists have not studied this specific trait directly, but cats do seem to forget other cats once they have been separated for a long time, so the same probably applies to people as well. Dogs, for whom humans are much more important, can remember people by their scent for months, probably years.
