You don’t really need a car in Key West unless you’re planning to do a lot of shopping or are heading out to multiple far-fetched points in the Keys. The island is only four miles long and about one mile wide, so almost everything is located within walking distance.

It is very easy to get around both Miami Beach and Key West by walking, biking, or ordering an Uber. The only time you will need a car on this entire trip is for the round trip drive from Miami to Key West.

While there is no regular ferry service between Miami and Key West, there are only one or two options for those determined to arrive by water. Your best bet is to look into a charter boat. Miami Charters offers a variety of options, from high-speed boats to laid-back sailing yachts, as well as fishing charters.

If you want to be in the heart of things, the best area to stay in Key West is the downtown area. Here, you’ll be within easy walking distance of Duval Street, giving you plenty of options for drinking and dining, as well as some excellent shopping.

Very safe. Swim in a pool! The biggest danger I have seen in the Keys is currents. On the tide changes, water can really be moving and the boat can get far from you fast.

During the cooler months, the farther south you go, the warmer it will be. Fort Lauderdale, Miami, the Keys, Marco Island and Naples will have the warmest water during the winter. During the summer months, the Gulf of Mexico will be five or more degrees warmer than the Atlantic Ocean.
