It’s job is crucial: to protect you from infections and germs. Throughout your life, your skin will change constantly, for better or worse. In fact, your skin will regenerate itself approximately every 27 days. Proper skin care is essential to maintaining the health and vitality of this protective organ.

In humans for example, the skin located under the eyes and around the eyelids is the thinnest skin in the body at 0.5 mm thick, and is one of the first areas to show signs of aging such as “crows feet” and wrinkles. The skin on the palms and the soles of the feet is 4 mm thick and is the thickest skin on the body.

By the time a skin cell reaches the surface, it’s little more than a dead, scale-like structure that’s filled with keratin but none of the ordinary cellular machinery. Each surface skin cell lasts about 30 days on the outside, which means you get an entirely new skin every month.

As we all know, humans and other mammals don’t ‘re-grow’ skin or other parts of the body, but other creatures can. “If you get a burn and the skin is burned away, your body cannot regenerate that lost skin.

Doctors have seen the effect in humans without quite understanding how it happens. “Kids will actually regrow a pretty good fingertip, after amputation, if you just leave it alone,” says Dr. Christopher Allan, from the University of Washington Medicine Hand Center, who wasn’t involved in the research.

Direct Pressure Doesn’t Stop Bleeding Add gauze, don’t change it. But if it keeps bleeding through each new one, you might need stitches. If direct pressure won’t stop the bleeding, get help.

Your wound likely requires stitches if: it’s deeper or longer than half an inch. it’s deep enough that fatty tissue, muscle, or bone is exposed. it’s wide or gaping.

A wound that is not stitched may take 1 to 4 weeks to heal, depending on the size of the opening. You will probably have a visible scar. You can discuss revision of the scar with your healthcare provider at a later time.

Any stitches or staples used on the outside need to be removed in about 7 to 14 days, depending on the location. It is normal to have some clear or bloody discharge on the wound covering or bandage (dressing) for the first few days after surgery.
