Two bags in a stall can last a week to several weeks. Some horse owners just add a portion of a bag at a time. Disadvantages to pelleted bedding include learning how to clean a stall with pellets.

Barns and other places that horses live and sleep in need to be kept clean. Stalls should be kept mucked out at least once a day. This takes quite a bit of time and responsibility. You need to be able to do these chores if you wish to own a horse.

Determining how often you should bathe your horse is often based upon personal preference and need, or even industry practice. If you run a racing stable, you’re probably giving your horse a soapy bath after every ride, but if you’re managing a hunter/jumper barn, it’s more likely to be once a week.

A well-drained sand or gravel base under the concrete is desirable, but not required. – Impervious floors require a level evenly compacted sub-layer. Sand or fine gravel may provide structural support and underground drainage. Solid rubber mats are often laid over concrete or well-packed road base mix.

Horse stall mats offer some shock absorption and are much more forgiving than a concrete floor, but they’re not intended to be the only source of cushion for a stalled horse. Generally you’ll need to add a layer of shavings, straw, or other bedding over the mats to create a comfortable space for your horse.

Ideally, horse stalls should be cleaned every day and kept as clean as possible. Since horses often lie down in their stalls at night, this behavior means that if you are not keeping the stalls clean, horses could be lying in their own urine or manure – and there’s nothing healthy about that!

Sprinkle absorbent deodorizer on any wet spots. Leave the empty stall to air dry with bedding pushed back as long as possible until you need to bring the horse back inside. Pull clean bedding back into the center of the stall, add new bedding if needed, and fluff the whole stall with a fork.

Stall cleaning should be a daily task. It usually takes no more than 20 minutes to give a stall a quick cleaning, but will take longer if you have neglected the duty for more than one day.
