State senators unanimously approved a House bill Wednesday requiring drivers to fasten and display a registration plate on their vehicles no later than 30 days after the registration or renewal date. The current Michigan Vehicle Code prohibits all driving on the highway without a visible plate.

Thirty-one states require their motorists to display front license plates and plates on the back of their vehicles. The “Rugged Nineteen” states that require only one plate include Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico.

Registrants provided their own license plates for display until 1910, when the state began to issue plates. As of 2021, plates are issued by the Michigan Department of State. Only rear plates have been required since 1981. Since January 1, 2015, residents have been required to replace their plates every ten years.

You do not need a license plate to drive a newly purchased vehicle directly home within Michigan within three days of purchase. Carry the assigned title and proof of insurance with you. Never use a plate from another vehicle as a substitute.
