Baby Boomers: Baby boomers were born between 1946 and 1964. They’re currently between 57-75 years old (71.6 million in the U.S.) Gen X: Gen X was born between 1965 and 1979/80 and is currently between 41-56 years old (65.2 million people in the U.S.) Gen Y: Gen Y, or Millennials, were born between 1981 and 1994/6.

Gatsby is a clear embodiment of the American Dream: he was born poor and rose to achieve a higher wealth and social status. The American Dream is the hope that anyone can earn success if they work hard enough. Gatsby’s love for Daisy led him to achieve extravagant wealth.

In The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald the power and drive the American Dream creates is present through wealth, social class, and the realities of the characters. The American Dream is defined as someone starting low on the economic, or social level, and working hard to achieve wealth and prosperity.

Our Founding Fathers’ vision sought to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity to pursue their vision of happiness. It also promotes faith in private free enterprise as a way to pursue that happiness. All people have an equal and inalienable right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of their happiness.

The vaunted American dream, the idea that life will get better, that progress is inevitable if we obey the rules and work hard, that material prosperity is assured, has been replaced by a hard and bitter truth. The American dream, we now know, is a lie. We will all be sacrificed.

Although it’s not easy to achieve the American dream, with passion, hard work and dedication, it is very possible to achieve. The American dream is the ideal that every us citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative.

Fitzgerald is saying that those who pursue the American Dream can never be satisfied, because the American Dream entails always striving for something more than what we already have. Gatsby embodies this in the decadent wealth that he is always accumulating, and also in his pursuit of Daisy.

The American Dream can be considered as a real term and as an attitude. The idea of the American Dream is where qualities of hard work and ambition are shown. It’s defined as someone starting low on the economic or social level, and working hard towards fortune, prosperity and or fame.

During the 1920s, the perception of the American Dream was that an individual can achieve success in life regardless of family history or social status if they only work hard enough.

Daisy as a Personification of the American Dream If Daisy’s voice promises money, and the American Dream is explicitly linked to wealth, it’s not hard to argue that Daisy herself—along with the green light at the end of her dock—stands in for the American Dream.

Scott Fitzgerald uses Daisy Buchanan to represent the American Dream because she is wealthy, sought after, and unattainable. Daisy represents the upper class women, and is a very frail character who is easily led into evil and physically and morally weak, which reflects on her character in the book.

The last line of The Great Gatsby is a metaphor of trying to row against the flow of current.

The Decline of the American Dream in the 1920s Fitzgerald portrays the 1920s as an era of decayed social and moral values, evidenced in its overarching cynicism, greed, and empty pursuit of pleasure.

What does this excerpt reveal about Nick? He is wealthy enough to live in West Egg but not wealthy enough to rent a very nice place.

What is corrupt? The ideal facet of Gatsby’s dream lies in the idealization of his dreams and pursuing purity through Daisy. He believes that he can achieve this with wealth and a higher social status. The corruptness in Gatsby’s ideals stem from them being too unrealistic.

Jay Gatsby is involved in criminal activities to create his illusion, whilst Tom and Myrtle are morally corrupt due to their adultery.

Nick finally explains the charm of Daisy’s voice as being “full of money.” The quote about “His Father’s Business, the service of a vast, vulgar and meretricious beauty” refers to Gatsby.

Daisy married Tom Buchanan because of his mass amount of opulence and his social standing. Divorce is not an option for her so she felt trapped or paralyzed in her situation. Her feeling of being paralyzed is also portrayed when she reveals her feeling about the birth of her child.
