Imams are appointed by the state to work at mosques and they are required to be graduates of an İmam Hatip high school or have a university degree in Theology.

There is a long history of female masters of Islamic sciences teaching men – the four imams of Sunni orthodoxy (Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Maalik, Imam Shafi’i, and Imam Ahmad) all were taught by women. Historically, certain sects have considered it acceptable for women to function as imams.

As an Islamic day starts at sunset, the Maghrib prayer is technically the first prayer of the day. Except for the Hanafi school, however, Sunni Muslims are also permitted to combine Maghrib and Isha prayers if they are traveling and incapable of performing the prayers separately.

Time for dhuhr and asr prayers overlap, but the zuhr prayer must be offered before asr, except the time about 10 minutes before sunset, which is delegated exclusively to asr.

The time period within which the Fajr daily prayer must be offered (with loud recitation of the quran) is from the beginning of dawn to sunrise.

Zuhr — The Midday or Afternoon Prayer: 4 Rakat Sunnat + 4 Rakat Fard + 2 Rakat Sunnah followed by 2 Rakat Nafl.

Tarawih prayers are prayed in pairs of two. Sunni Muslims believe it is customary to attempt a takmil (“complete recitation” of the Quran) as one of the religious observances of Ramadan, by reciting at least one juz’ per night in tarawih. Tarawih prayers are considered optional (sunnah), not obligatory.

Fajr nafl prayer (Arabic: رَغِيبَةُ الْفَجْرِ‎ ; dawn supererogatory prayer) is an Islamic prayer (salat) that is performed after the second adhan of dawn and before Fajr (dawn-time prayer).

Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha are all names of compulsory prayers.

Recite bismillah. (correction: just think “Bismillah” in your head because mentioning the name of Allah in the bathroom is not proper) Wash the right hand up to the wrist (and between the fingers) up to three times (3 times is sunnah but once is fard/mandatory), then similarly for the left hand.

Sunnah of Ghusl

1. Washing both the hands up to the wrists.
2. Wash the private parts with the left hand and remove dirt or filth from the body.
3. Perform wudu (ablution).
4. Pour water over the head three times, and rub the hair so that the water reaches the roots of the hair.

An ablution area was recently installed to provide a space for the cleansing process prior to prayer. Wudu, or ablution, is a traditional ritual that refers to the mental preparation and physical cleanliness before prayer. Now Muslim students at UM have a place to perform the ritual before the five daily prayers.
