As a highly accurate solar calendar, the Gregorian calendar has enabled efficient record keeping and helped farmers time the seasons.

The Gregorian calendar was decreed in 1582 by the papal bull Inter gravissimas by Pope Gregory XIII, to correct the erroneous assumption in the Julian calendar that a year lasts 365.25 days, when in reality it is about 365.2422 days.

Civil calendars worldwide 168 of the world’s countries use the Gregorian calendar as their sole civil calendar. Five countries have not adopted the Gregorian calendar as of 2021: Afghanistan and Iran (which use the Solar Hijri calendar), Ethiopia and Eritrea (the Ethiopian calendar), and Nepal (Vikram Samvat).

The Julian calendar is still used in parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church and in parts of Oriental Orthodoxy as well as by the Berbers. The Julian calendar has two types of years: a normal year of 365 days and a leap year of 366 days.

The Roman calendar was counted Ab urbe condita (“from the foundation of the city”), in 753 BC; and it continued in use until the Anno Domini calendar was introduced in AD 525.

Originally Answered: Why are years before Christ (B.C.) counted backwards? Because its a retrospective calendar with the start point at year 1 of the Gregorian calendar and must therefore count backwards in order to make any sense, just like negative numbers.

But nobody really knows exactly when Jesus was born. Some scholars think that he was born between 6 B.C. and 4 B.C., based partly on the biblical story of Herod the Great.
