The National Trust

Chartwell is famous for the sole reason that Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War, lived there for most of his adult life. The house has been preserved exactly was it was when Churchill lived there as a shrine to the man, his life and his legacy.

Closing the house over winter gives us full, unrestricted access to each of the rooms, allowing us to go through each in the depth and detail that they need. The house team spend roughly a week in each room of the house over this period, going through it from top to bottom.

Episode four also features a dramatic death. Winston Churchill’s secretary Venetia Scott gets fatally hit by a bus after stepping out in the fog. Indeed, both her life and death are a work of fiction, and her character is actually based on a number of different members of the prime minister’s staff.

Lady Spencer-Churchill thought it was a good resemblance – “really quite alarmingly like him” – but also said it made him look too cross, while recognising that it was a familiar expression. Churchill’s son Randolph thought the portrait made him look “disenchanted”.

In the season one finale, British Parliament has commissioned the artist Sutherland (played by actor Stephen Dillane) to paint a portrait of Churchill to celebrate his 80th birthday. The experience of painting this pond is more like a violent wrestling match for Churchill than a time of meditation and peace.
