Nora’s use of Torvald’s pet names for her to win his cooperation is an act of manipulation on her part. She knows that calling herself his “little bird,” his “squirrel,” and his “skylark,” and thus conforming to his desired standards will make him more willingly to give in to her wishes.

Nora begins to flirt with Dr. Rank, coquettishly showing him her new stockings. She hints that she has a great favor to ask Dr. Rank (presumably she would like him to intervene on Krogstad’s behalf).

Rank’s talk of moral disease and his own affliction are often cited as symbolic. He has tuberculosis of the spine. This could possibly be meant to represent the diseased backbone of unenlightened society, a society where men and women don’t live as equals. His death also could be seen as symbolic.

Nora Helmer, the main protagonist of the story, is the wife of Torvald and a mother of three children. She lives like a doll in a doll-house, and her character serves as a symbol for every oppressed woman who is restricted from living a free life.

In A Doll’s House, Nora does not kill herself. She does consider suicide at one point, but once she realizes that she has spent her entire life as the “doll” or the plaything of her father and then her husband, she determines to leave Torvald and strike out on her own.

While speaking with Nora, Dr. Rank confesses his love for her, adding that Torvald is not the only man who would make sacrifices for her. In the end, however, we learn that Torvald does not even consider sacrificing himself for Nora. In his confession, Dr.

In the end, Dr. Rank dies of his illness at the same time that Nora’s marriage to Torvald dissolves. As Nora and Torvald separate, they receive the doctor’s card with black crosses in the mail, signifying his imminent death.

Krogstad implies that he isn’t concerned only about the money; his position at the bank is very important to him. He speaks of a “bad mistake” he committed, which ruined his reputation and made it very difficult for his career to advance.

Unlike Torvald, who seems to desire respect for selfish reasons, Krogstad desires it for his family’s sake. Like Nora, Krogstad is a person who has been wronged by society, and both Nora and Krogstad have committed the same crime: forgery of signatures.

Why does Krogstad think he is being fired? Krogstad thinks he is being replaced by Ms. Linde because he saw her with Torvald. Krogstad has the power to manipulate Nora and force her to do things, because he knows her secrets, and can destroy everything by telling Torvald the truth when he wants to.

When Torvald returns, Nora tries to talk him into letting Krogstad keep his job. Torvald says he can’t stand Krogstad because he does dishonest things like forgery. Nora’s husband goes on to say that he can’t stand being around such awful people. Nora, fearing she will corrupt them, refuses to see them.

Krogstad blames Torvald for forcing him back into deceitful actions. He says that he can never forgive Torvald because he wants Nora to worry.

Torvald and Krogstad are both dislikable characters who have a façade of strength and dominance about them. For both of them, strength is tantamount to bullying. Krogstad bullies in a sniveling way through attempted blackmail. Torvald, however, is a conventional representative of the system, of society.

A Doll’s House ends with the slamming of a door. Nora turns her back on her husband and kids and takes off into the snow (brr) to make her own way in the world (brrrrr). It’s a pretty bold decision, to say the least. Some might even call it foolish.

In calling her “my sweet little skylark” and “my little squirrel,” Torvald is implying his ownership over Nora as well as her lack of maturity. Torvald’s teasing Nora about eating sweets is actually a way of keeping her from going against his wishes. Torvald treats Nora as a child with no sense.

Although she is frustrated by the fact that the other characters believe she is a “spendthrift,” she does not seem to really mind, and happily plays along with Torvald’s pet names for her, which include “skylark,” “songbird,” “squirrel,” and “pet.” Torvald also regularly refers to her and treats her as a child, for …
