The U.S. Constitution reflects this principle because it allows most of the people to elect their leaders (The US is a representative democratic nation), and to petition to their elected representatives, in order to express their ideas and concerns.

The Framers of the Constitution wanted the people to have a voice in government. Yet the Framers also feared that public opinion might stand in the way of sound decision making. To solve this problem, they looked to republicanism as a model of government.

The Articles of Confederation did not fully reflect the principle of “republicanism” because it stated one political party should maintain most of the power voters had no say in who represented them in federal government state governments were inferior to the national government representatives from each state …

Two essential features of a democratic government are:

• Democracy is a rule by the people. It is people who rule themselves by participating in the making of these rules.
• In a democracy people have the power to elect their leaders. These leaders or representatives meet and make decisions for the entire population.

Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. Monopoly over people is not a feature of democracy.

Some of the major features of a democracy are:

• The final decision making power rests with those elected by the people.
• It must be based on a free and fair election.
• Each adult citizen must have one vote and each vote must have one value.
• It should rule within limits set by constitutional law and citizens’ rights.
