Kafka’s Trial ends suddenly with a very brief chapter entitled “The End.” After all of the bureaucratic delays, amorous digressions, and lectures on law and art, Josef K. is summarily executed on his birthday outside of town, in a quarry, by two men who seem to be dressed for a night at the opera, top hat and all.

In Franz Kafka’s The Trial, Josef K. is guilty; his crime is that he does not accept his own humanity. This crime is not obvious throughout the novel, but rather becomes gradually and implicitly apparent to the reader.

On October 29, 1969, in an extraordinary move, Judge Julius Hoffman ordered Bobby Seale bound and gagged. His trial was severed from the Chicago Eight on November 5, 1969. Finding him in contempt, Hoffman sentenced Seale to four years in prison, appealed at, U.S. v.

The Chicago 7 were a motley crew of activists. He had been arrested in 1943 for failing to report for his World War II draft physical and spent time in federal prison. John Froines, 29, was a chemist.

Hoffman subsequently sentenced Seale to four years in prison for contempt of court and declared a mistrial in his case. (The contempt charges were overturned on appeal, and Seale’s conspiracy charges were eventually dropped.) Judge Hoffman dispensed the maximum five-year prison sentence, plus $5,000 in fines.

Hoffman eventually turned himself in in 1980, served a year in jail and on work release, then got back together with his old chum Jerry Rubin—albeit in an unexpected way.

What happened to the Chicago Seven? After the months-long trial, the remaining seven defendants were acquitted of conspiracy, but all except Froines and Weiner were found guilty of crossing state lines with intent to incite a riot. They were each fined $5,000 and sentenced to five years in prison.
