Earth is, for the main part, connected to space via the magnetic poles. When electrically charged particles from space bombard our planet, visible light occurs; i.e. aurora borealis in the Northern hemisphere or aurora australis in the Southern hemisphere.

Some of the interconnections between places are the result of natural processes. Other interconnections are the result of human activities such as trade, transport and communication. These move people, goods, services and ideas between places, linking them together.

Examples of movement include the United States’ westward expansion, the Information Revolution, and immigration.

Geographers can describe the location of a place in one of two ways: absolute and relative.

To help us locate places on the earth’s surface, we use a coordinate system. This coordinate system is like placing a giant grid over the earth. This grid has lines extending from east to west called lines of latitude and lines extending from north to south called lines of longitude.

Vicinal location refers to the location of a specific place (Phils.) within a confined or limited neighborhood (Southeast Asia). It tells the neighboring countries around the Philippines.

An insular area of the United States is a U.S. territory that is not one of the 50 states and is not a Federal district. All territories but one are unincorporated, and all but four are considered to be unorganized.

An “insular location” is one related to an island; a “vicinal location” is one that is in the neighborhood of some other feature. refers to the location of a place in relation to the bodies of water near it. From knowing where exactly to meet up with a friend to locating buried treasure, absolute location is important for locating oneself in the world at any given time. However, sometimes a person only needs to use relative location to describe a particular place to another person.
