In The Odyssey, Homer describes Scylla as being a rather frightful sea creature with a crab-like shell, six long necks, triple rows of teeth on each head, and twelve feet dangling from her monstrous body. In fact, Scylla’s name is derived from Greek words that describe the animals she looks like.

But what can we say are the main traits of epic heroes? There are seven main traits of epic heroes; they are of noble birth or elevated status. They have superhuman capabilities, are a vast traveler, an unmatched warrior, a cultural legend, demonstrate humility, and finally, battle superhuman foes.

Odysseus is considered an epic hero for his role as King of Ithaca, his participation in the war, and his journey home.

SKYLLA (Scylla) was a sea-monster who haunted the rocks of a narrow strait opposite the whirlpool of Kharybdis (Charybdis). Ships who sailed too close to her rocks would lose six men to her ravenous, darting heads.

As the ship avoids Charybdis, it inevitably comes too close to Scylla’s lair. She reaches out with her six necks and grabs a man in each mouth. She then pulls them high up into the air and onto the rocks outside her lair. Having done that, she proceeds to devour them, even as they scream for help.

The only way to beat a hydra would be to set fire to the head stumps before they can come back, (which somebody else pointed out here) or to absolutely obliterate it so that it has nothing to grow back from. Hercules also beat it by tying its heads into a knot.

First, the Hydra is described as being so toxic that even the air around it kills instantly. Heracles actually fought it while holding its breath. Second, the Scylla is an ocean creature. She is either greatly inhibited on land, or can’t move at all (despite her dog-limbs).

Charybdis is Percy’s half-sister, as they are both children of Poseidon, and she would also be Percy’s great-aunt for Gaea is Kronos’ mother. The expression “between a rock and a hard place” comes from the story of Scylla and Charybdis, as the phrase is about picking between two tough situations.
