Underneath the dashboard there is a switch that the brake pedal presses into. When you press the brakes this switch is activated and the brake lights turn on. When you take your foot off the brake, it presses this switch in and the brake lights turn off.

Brake Light – There may be an issue with the braking system or the parking brake is engaged. Collision Mitigation Braking System Light – There’s an issue with the system or it’s off. When using a conveyor-type car wash, you will have to temporarily deactivate the automatic parking-brake function. To do this: Bring the vehicle to a stop with the brake pedal and shift to NEUTRAL. Turn off the ignition, and push the parking-brake switch down within 2 seconds.

To confirm that the brake switch is not clicking, you might need to climb into the driver side foot well, locate the switch (it’s a small black box behind the brake pedal), and press the brake pedal.

Bad Trailer Light Plug Sometimes trailer light plugs can corrode and cause the tail lights to stay on. If the tail lights turn off, the switch is likely faulty and the light plug assembly might need to be replaced.
