Print awareness (also called concepts of print) is the understanding that print carries meaning, that books contain letters and words.

​Concepts of Print refers to the awareness of ‘how print works’. understanding that print conveys a message. knowledge about book orientation and directionality of print, and. distinction between sentences, words and letters, and. knowledge of the alphabetic system and the difference between letters and words.

One way to teach the awareness of word is to have students clap the words in a sentence. But I wanted to try something a little more hands-on. So I created these silly sentence trains. Each page has a train with either 3, 4, or 5 cars (for 3, 4, or 5-word sentences).

1. Listen up. Good phonological awareness starts with kids picking up on sounds, syllables and rhymes in the words they hear.
2. Focus on rhyming.
3. Follow the beat.
4. Get into guesswork.
5. Carry a tune.
6. Connect the sounds.
7. Break apart words.
8. Get creative with crafts.

Parents can model phonemic awareness by reading aloud to their children, talking about the spelling, structure, and sounds in a word; showing their child how to write a word while saying the sounds; or leading games that incorporate letter and language play.

In fact, phonemic awareness is necessary for phonics instruction to be effective. Before students can use a knowledge of sound-spelling relationships to decode written words, they must understand that words (whether written or spoken) are made up of sounds.

Examples include being able to identify words that rhyme, counting the number of syllables in a name, recognizing alliteration, segmenting a sentence into words, and identifying the syllables in a word. The most sophisticated — and last to develop — is called phonemic awareness.

Basically, phonemic awareness skills include learning how to break apart (segment) and combine (blend) the sounds in words. Phonemic awareness should begin in Pre-K with the focus on the simpler phonemic awareness skills of isolation and identifying beginning and ending sounds.

A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound in speech. When we teach reading we teach children which letters represent those sounds. For example – the word ‘hat’ has 3 phonemes – ‘h’ ‘a’ and ‘t’. What is a grapheme? A grapheme is a letter or a number of letters that represent the sounds in our speech.
