5 Tips for Structuring and Writing Better Paragraphs

Short paragraphs are easier to read and understand. Writing experts recommend paragraphs of no more than 150 words in three to eight sentences. Using short paragraphs is an ideal way to open up your writing and create white space. In turn, this makes your writing more inviting and easier to read.

Think of the importance of sentence structure – short, simple sentences or truncated sentences can create tension, haste or urgency, whereas longer compound or complex sentences are slower, and often feature in formal texts.

Since the words in short paragraphs are isolated, readers will be able to concentrate on the thought of one or two sentences. Therefore being able to digest the point you are driving. Short and concise sentences are more urgent in nature, thus giving readers the need to read what you are talking about.

A paragraph is a collection of sentences about a single idea. A short paragraph might be only two or three sentences long. Paragraph length, however, is relative to the surrounding paragraphs. If your document contains much longer paragraphs, a paragraph of five or six sentences might be considered short.

In order for a paragraph to maintain a sense of unity, the paragraph must focus solely on a single idea, point, or argument that is being discussed.

How to Write a Good Introduction

1. Keep your first sentence short.
2. Don’t repeat the title.
3. Keep the introduction brief.
4. Use the word “you” at least once.
5. Dedicate 1-2 sentences to articulating what the article covers.
6. Dedicate 1-2 sentences to explaining why the article is important.
