Part 1 of 2: Removing the old airbag

Look behind the steering wheel to find the access holes where the bolts are located. Some manufacturer’s have slots which give access to a retainer clip or ring which requires a screwdriver to release. After locating the access hole loosen the mounting bolts or clips which will release one side of the airbag.

First you have to deactivate the system . Disconnect the battery and wait a couple of minutes. The remainder of the deployed air bag is clipped on the backing of the steering wheel and can in most cases be removed without removing the steering wheel. Usually from behind with four clip retainers or regular fasteners.

2. Step 1: Disconnect the negative terminal on the car battery.
3. Step 2: Locate the screw holes on the back of the steering wheel.
4. Step 3: Undo all of the screws and remove the airbag.
5. Step 4: Unplug the airbag.
6. Step 1: Plug in your new airbag.

To remove the steering wheel you must do some disassembly first. The steering wheel cover is held on with two screws behind the steering wheel spokes; use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove them. When you lift the top of the steering wheel, you’ll expose the horn assembly and cruise control wires if equipped.

First, you’ll probably need to go out and buy a tool you might not have — a harmonic balancer puller. That’s a specialized tool that’s used to safely remove harmonic balancers without damaging your vehicle, and it also works on things like gear pulleys and steering wheels. In which case it would be difficult to drive and the engine would overheat fairly soon after. How long does it take to replace a harmonic balancer? On most engines, it takes a little over an hour.

As long as it’s not over tighten (as with any bolt really) it still can be used. If it’s something as simple as a harmonic balancer bolt I don’t worry about it. Now if it’s head bolts or main bolts then I’ll replace them. Even though they generally can be reused.
