Instead of 70 being some form of sept in French, it’s soixante-dix. If you’re starting to get the hang of the numbers already, you’ll recognize that 70 in French basically translates to “60 and 10”. With that logic, for 71-79, use the numbers 11-19, not 1-9, at the end….

The letter ‘Z’ in French is pronounced like the ‘Z’ in English: listen. That’s simple enough, but there’s one twist to the ‘Z’ in French as it can also be a silent letter. This occurs in almost every instance in which the ‘Z’ appears at the end of a word. Without the ‘Z’ sound, it would simply be pronounced [ga].

When talking about “one hundred” or “one thousand” in French, we don’t say the “one”, we only say “cent” and “mille”. However when talking about “one million”, “one billion” we do say the one: “un million, un milliard”.

Numbers 20-69 Tens and units are joined with a hyphen. So, 22 = vingt-deux, 45 = quarante-cinq etc. If the unit is a 1, then the word et is inserted between tens and units: 21 = vingt et un, 31 = trente et un etc.

The French 7 is one digit we never need to clarify with each other since we both put a bar through the 7. But sometimes French people’s 1’s look like 7’s. The French seven is one to learn and know. It always has a bar through it!
