You can type a straight vertical line, or “|,” on most modern keyboards dating back to some of the 1980s IBM PCs. It’s generally found above the backslash, so you can type a “|” by holding down the shift key and hitting the “” key.

“|”, How can I type it?

1. Shift-/ (“backslash”).
2. German keyboard it is on the left together with < and > and the Alt Gr modifier key must be pressed to get the pipe.
3. Note that depending on the font used, this vertical bar can be displayed as a consecutive line or by a line with a small gap in the middle.

The bar was intended to be used as the representation for the logical OR symbol. In the 1967 revision of ASCII, along with the equivalent ISO 464 code published the same year, the code point was defined to be a broken vertical bar, and the exclamation mark character was allowed to be rendered as a solid vertical bar.

The vertical line in coordinate geometry is a line that goes up to down. In other words, the line that is parallel to the y-axis and has the same x coordinate point is vertical. A vertical line can only be drawn when the line has the same x coordinate.

Technical information

Hold down the ALT key (left alt key). Type the alt code(you should use the numbers on the keypad, not the ones on top row) for the special character or symbol you want to get and release the ALT key.

The most commonly used ones include ¢ (Alt+4), — (em dash, Alt+Shift+Hyphen), and ˚ (degree symbol, Alt+K). If you type in accent-heavy languages like Spanish or French, the Alt key should be your favorite key.

On most keyboards the Alt key is located on either side of the space bar. However, on some keyboards there is only one Alt key.
