Look at the digital or meter display on the multimeter or voltmeter. It should read 6 volts if the battery is in good condition and is at least 20 percent charged. If it reads less than 5 volts, recharge the battery.

Most of the motorcycle batteries are the conventional ‘lead-acid’ batteries. These batteries can be either of 6 volts or 12 volts. If the batteries are in good condition, then the actual value of voltages isn’t these values. When the battery is charged fully, and it’s at peak, the terminal voltage of each cell is 2.1V.

Telling the Difference

1. Find the battery in the battery compartment.
2. Manually count the number of battery vents contained in the battery. The battery vents are usually covered with small round plastic caps located at the top of the battery. Multiply the number by 2.1 volts.

You can jumpstart a 6 volt with 12 volts, but the safe way to do it is with the key off. Use the 12 volt to impart a charge to the 6 volt battery and then disconnect it before you try to start the engine, otherwise you might fry your gauges and generator/alternator.

This will run your battery dry and create a thermal runaway scenario, which is very dangerous. Again, some people use a 12V charger to get their 6V battery jump started, but it is never advisable to use a 12V charger to try to fully charge your 6V battery.

Re: 6 volt, positive ground boost help?

1. Disconnect the lead from the starter to the starter solenoid at the starter solenoid.
2. Connect the 12V vehicle Positive to the 6V vehicle Positive.
3. Temporarily clamp the negative booster cable to the starter cable to rotate the engine. Unclamp it once the motor starts.

#1 Disconnect the ground cable of the 6 volt battery. Make sure all lights, radio etc are shut off in the 6V car. Connect 12V battery, start car, take jumper cable off ground and quickly stick the 6V cable back on before car stalls out.

Your 6 volt starter will also work with the 12 volt system, with the caveat that you want your engine to start up relatively quickly. That will prevent your starter from being engaged too long and overheating.

To jump your 4020 just let your truck high idle for 10 minutes then get someone to start the 4020..

Wiring two 6-volt devices in series reduces the voltage from the battery by half so each device gets 6 volts. Cut one strip of AWG 18 gauge wire using a knife. It only needs to be about 12 inches long. You use this wire to connect between the 12-volt battery and the 6-volt light bulb to switch the power to 6 volts.

12v to 6v converter using zener diode: LED indicators, in over-voltage protection, in reference to voltage circuit. You can use this DC to DC 12v to 6v converter circuit with any other circuit by taking voltage across the 6.2v zener diode. You will get ~6.2V at the output.

With a few modifications, a lower voltage (such as a 6V) battery can be charged with a larger (such as 12V) power source.

1. Snip the battery clamps off the charger, leaving approximately four inches of wire on the battery clamp.
2. Solder the positive battery charger wire to one of the leads on the first resistor.

You can use the battery jump starter for charging Power Wheels batteries when your charger is broken. Some portable battery jump starters pack a punch, and they can efficiently recharge 6V and 12V Power Wheels.

Because most 6 volt batteries have a higher number of amp hours for each battery, it makes sense to purchase two 6 volts and wire them in a series – that gives you 12 volts, meeting your electrical system’s needs. The 6-volt batteries last longer than most 12 volt ones, and they are lighter, as well.

For 6v batteries, the first charge should be 10 hours, with regular charging taking 6 hours. For 12v batteries, the first charge should be 18 hours, with regular charging at 12 hours.
