Sprinkle some baking soda in the bottom of the pan and then add enough water to cover the scorched food. Bring the mixture to a boil and simmer it for 15 to 30 minutes to loosen the burnt sugar. In place of the baking soda, you can also try two or three cut-up lemons or salt.

Glad to hear coffee grounds are working for your tomato plants! Nevertheless they’re often used on acid-loving plants like azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries and tomatoes. Be careful, however, not to overload tomatoes with too many coffee grounds. Tomatoes like slightly acidic soil, not overly-acidic soil.

I make precious pulverized eggshells and use them as a dietary supplement for selected plants. Tomatoes that have a handful of eggshell meal worked into the planting site are not likely to develop blossom end rot, and plenty of soil calcium reduces tip burn in cabbage, too.

I use washed crushed eggshells in water around the tomatoes. Also barn lime placed around the plant when it is about to flower will help sometimes. Lime and gypsum work well- I use the pelletized stuff because it’s easier to use and not a dusty, plus it is coated in molasses, which is another good source of calcium.
