New study finds some people can be trained to learn absolute pitch. Absolute pitch, commonly known as “perfect pitch,” is the ability to identify a note by hearing it. The ability is considered remarkably rare, estimated to be less than one in 10,000 individuals.

Here’s a simple way to think about it: for a singer, absolute perfect pitch means you can pluck an existing note out of the air and sing it in tune very accurately, while relative pitch means that a singer could hear an existing note and then use it as a reference point for every other note they sing.

You will be able to sing or identify a note, given that you know what one other note is. For example, if you are told that the key note is A, and then A is sounded, then you will be able to sing D or F sharp or any other note, above or below that A if you have relative pitch.

Relative Pitch confers countless talents and skills on you because you can hear with crystal clarity and focus. In fact, many musicians believe that Relative Pitch is all they need in order to be a great musician.

You should be able to easily tell major/minor, and if you do some ear training you can hear if its a 7th or whatever. Augmented and diminished chords are pretty rare. People with perfect pitch can discern random notes played, cluster, etc.

Perfect Pitch and Singing Perfect pitch is not required to sing in tune. If you have perfect pitch then you will almost certainly sing in tune, because your ear is so highly sensitive to out-of-tune notes. This means that you would only tolerate your own singing if it was pitched correctly!

If you had perfect pitch it is possible to lose it. I believe most people who have begin to lose it in approaching their 50’s according to a study which I will look around for. Of course if you can lose it at 50 you could probably lose it at any time in your life so I will not presume your age.

Dahyun has revealed on camera that she has absolute/perfect pitch, which is the extremely rare ability to be able to identify or recreate a given musical note without a previous reference. Around 1/50000 have this ability, and Dahyun is one of them!

Out of every 10,000 musicians, however, between 100 and 1100 (that’s 1-11%) may have the gift. Perfect pitch is also observed to run in families, which suggests it’s at least partially genetic.
